Incarcerated Youth Tutorial Project
Formed by the Muslim Student Association, the Incarcerated Youth Tutorial Project (IYTP) has been tutoring and mentoring juvenile students for over two decades. Currently, IYTP is serving the Camp Fred Miller Juvenile Detention Facility in the greater Los Angeles area by helping students confront their past in order to lead them to a brighter future.
Through mentoring and peer support, one of our objectives is to become an empowering dynamic for the incarcerated youth and provide a safe environment for personal growth and development. In addition, in order to address the issue of recidivism, we plan to actively engage in building strong one-on-one relationships with the students and serve as positive role models for them. In addition, IYTP focuses on education by encouraging the students to pursue a secondary education through GED tutoring and educational workshops. By getting them acquainted with college and different career opportunities, we plan to motivate students to re-evaluate their life trajectories. Essentially, IYTP hopes to advance student’s lives by giving them the second chance they need to turn their lives around.
